The North Carolina Paramedic Competition was started as a result of requests from paramedic services. After a two year discussion and visiting other states viewing methods of how they conducted competitions, the format that is being used in North Carolina was designed. Four preliminary sites with a maximum of ten teams being judged by EMS educators and NCCEP physicians are used to qualify two teams from each site to compete in finals. In the preliminary competition each team is presented a practical scenario and a short written test. During the practical scenario they are also judged on professionalism: looking at the areas of appearance and attire, communications, organization, patient rapport, conduct and attitude. The session is designed to present a scenario that requires rapid but thorough treatment. Skills during the problem are not simulated. The practice time needed to prepare and the testing are valuable training situations for the EMS professionals competing. The competition was first conducted in 1991 with fifteen teams. In 1992 the field had grown to 28. The past years' preliminary sites were filled to capacity. The scenarios, both preliminary and final, continue to challenge the candidates with "true to life" issues.
